Become the star of your own fitness story

5 encouraging mottos for fitness beginners

No slogan is to everyone's taste and some are downright patronising. I've collected some more encouraging mottos for fitness beginners

Mottos for fitness beginners from those who've been there (and still are there)

A lot of fitness-related slogans end up demotivating rather than motivating (Just Do It? Pain is temporary but failure lasts forever? FFS!).

Maybe they do help others, but they’re not for me.

Every now and then, though, I come across one that hits the spot. Here are a few that have helped me.

No matter how slow you are, you've just lapped everyone on the couch

This is one that really hit home to me when I saw it.  I’ve been struggling to attribute the source - I picked it up Sport England’s wonderful This Girl Can campaign and it’s stuck with me.  

I've actually heard it many a time since, and there's a reason for that - it works!

There’s a few more slogans to be found at This Girl Can - like “I jiggle, therefore I am” and loads of inspiring photos of women doing their thing.  A lot are aimed at challenging gender stereotypes. Mine it for everything it’s worth!

Fitter, not fit

Everything’s relative.  The only person that matters is you, the only judgement that matters is yours and the only levels that count are the ones that show that you’ve made progress.  No absolutes here, only relatives.

And not the kind of relative that keeps criticising you for being unfit, either.

Taking longer to get stronger

If you have a tendency to get impatient, this is one for you.  You’re taking your time, but you’ll get there. No rush. The longer you take, the more likely you are to keep it up. While you might have fitness goals you want to meet (a good thing), ultimately, it is enjoyment of the journey that's actually going to keep you coming back for more. And what happens when you meet your goals? You're still aiming to be on the same journey, whether you've met them or not.

Seriously, you have all the time in the world.  There is always a goal you can hit. Even if you can clearly see and feel that you cut a softer profile than you did, that your limbs are stiffer than they were, you can move forward from where you are now. If the goal is demoralising you, the problem doesn't lie with you but the goal. If you're losing motivation, try looking at what you're aiming at from a different perspective.

Beginner status just means you're one step closer to reaching your fitness goals.

I had to think a long time before including this one, because the words “beginner” and “status” aren’t usually that helpful.  They can make you feel that the joke's on you.

Also, I'm about the journey rather than the end point and reaching your goals is about end points.

There’s no point in pretending that they don’t get used, though (and the title of this post is "Mottos for fitness newbies". What is a newbie if not a beginner, so hypocrite alert!).

What's more, I'm not really trying to play censor - not too much, anyway!

What I like about this slogan - and why I chose it - is that it stresses that everything is relative when it comes to your own fitness.  So this one’s here for those times when you turn up at a club or an event and feel a bit out of your depth. Just stick it in your back pocket ready for when you need it.

I hope there’s something here you can use when you need a bit of extra encouragement. 

If these mottos don't suit you, then don't hesitate to chuck them away. I'm not here to tell you what works for you and what doesn't. As long as you can find encouragement where and when you need it, that's all that matters.
